Last night, my daughter was feeling very overwhelmed. She was melting down right in front of me. She said she needed me to sit with her and listen. So instead of spending my night watching the next episode of my Netflix show, I sat with her.
She shared her struggles, worries and negative feelings about friends, school and upcoming responsibilities. She cried.
Everything in her mind was connected.
Everything was too much. Alone, she could handle one thing, but not all together.
Overwhelm happens when we are trying to be two places at one time.
Here are a few tips when you are Overwhelmed:
Write down all you feel like you need to do.
Prioritize the list. (assign things out if someone else could do it.)
Be Present in the task you are doing (take 3 deep breaths before starting your task.)
Set reminders, so your brain doesn't have to think about it.
Ground yourself with a mantra (i.e. I feel overwhelm and that's ok. I always find time for the things that are important.)
BREATHE and Trust yourself that you can handle it.
